Ollie's Evaluation

Unit 3 Evaluation.
1. My strengths in the video was staring and filming as I feel comfortable doing both.I could  find different and interesting and creative angles easily and using the tripod to do panning shots. Working as a team with friends help as we could give each other advice about things we could improve and try new things when filming. We each had a say on what we thought should go into the video when editing, but we did find it difficult to find a job for everyone to do when editing as only one person can edit on one computer. We had different parts of the video allocated to what we had to include in the video. We didn’t really have a leader in the group as we all gave our idea on what we would like in the video. Some of the weakness we had was start late for filming which made us extend the time we wanted to be filming. We also had some distractions and interferences from other friends which may have slowed down the filming process. We didn’t have much knowledge on the editing program and did not know had to add specific things we wanted in our video, but we did then get help from someone who had good knowledge of the program and helped us extend our editing knowledge. We could have prioritised what we needed to do more because it may have helped improve the organisation of the group.

2. First we went on the web and researched videos that we wanted our video to look similar too. We had an idea in our head which we discussed in class on what we want the video to look like. We then went out and tried different shots to see if it would work in our video. After finding this information we started to film our project. After we finished filming we came back to start editing each part of the video and putting them together so it flows through as one hole video. We added different editing techniques such as black and white shot or animating different parts of the video and inputting text to explain what is going on. I think the video we produced was a good result as it looks similar to high end produced cycling movies. We produced a video of mountain biking on our local hill and trails. We included different angles such as POV (point of view), panning shots and normal still shots. We edited the video so when some still shots appeared we would have a POV shot of the same part which makes you feel more like what it looked like when going. We researched by looking at other video’s by other people and looked for shot ideas and any interesting editing used. The filming took 2 days and we took the POV shots when we were editing, and we made sure we had spare shots so we could choose which suited the video better and gave it a better flow. The editing of the video took longer than we thought because editing the clips together so it looks like you are going somewhere was difficult to cut at the correct time and get them into the right order. The planning of the video was easy as we didn’t know the how difficult it would be to put our ideas into our video. Also finding a song was difficult as we couldn’t find a song which we all thought went well with the video, but we finally decides on ‘5/4’ by Gorillaz.

3. The techniques we used when filming the video was: continuity editing, this is when the shot before is followed by the next part of the track which suggests it has a start and end. We add black and white shot when editing to and it made the shot more noticeable. Also had a smaller video in the corner of some of the shots to show the POV of the rider and in the background you can see the shot of the terrain and speed of the rider.  James designed and made our title using photoshop and then Ken imputed them at the start of the video. We print screened some parts of the video then cut out the rider in photoshop the imputed them back into the video and annotated so the rider goes to the side in a freeze frame and then it types next to them to give you information about which trail or rider is on screen.

4. We used copyright of some logo’s an of some of the biking equipment we used such as the bikes and clothing. We asked a local councillor for permission to ride on the hill and also completed a risk assessment which allowed us to ride there. But the footage and idea of the video was all our own. This didn’t really effect the video but, If were to shoot the video again we would have take these things into consideration.

James's Evaluation

Media Nationals Unit 3 Level 2 Evaluation
James Shadbolt 11.4

My strengths in Unit 3 were filming and graphics, i feel comfortable in doing both. I enjoyed creating different graphics for the video as i enjoy using Photoshop. During the production of the video I felt that i was much stronger during the initial filming stages as i had more input, but i felt like I had little say in the editing part, which was a weakness of the group, but that being said i think that i help with editing  by providing graphics for the video, but after i told the group i want more input, i had a good say on what being done with the editing. Another weakness is that i arrived late and put the shoot back 10 minutes and some days it was hard for some group members to attend. A weakness of the team is finding a good camera position and getting a good shot. I also had difficulties communicating with Ollie and Ken on when to start recording which took up about 10 minutes per shoot, which made the overall shooting time longer. On the first day of shooting Ken fell of and put the shoot back by 3 and a half week because injuries to his back. Also the group had distractions and interferences from other trail users and friends that live nearby that were on the hill while filming, this also delayed the filming process, because of having to reshoot certain parts of the trail.

Our finished product was a video promoting mounting biking trails on grinshill. The video we produced is good as it looks like a high quality, professional video. We used different shots such as close ups, mid shots and long distance shots. I did research into different camera positions by looking at different mounting biking videos. I learnt that different shots look good for different parts of the production. As a group we all planned out a production schedule on what we would do on each day and how long we would spend shooting. We all did a little bit of filming but I personally do the most as i wasn't riding in the production, and filming was is one of my strengths. In my group Ken did most the editing with Ollie and myself having a say in what he does and how the edit looks overall. In the production we used a variety of different shots such as close ups, mid shots and long distance shots to get our video looking professional, and in the editing we also used POV (point of view) which was filmed using a chest mounted camera on the rider, this gave the our video a professional feel. You are able to see where the rider is going due to putting in the POV shots. They were edited in the video so the viewer can see what the rider is seeing, and we also have a rider pop out the screen and say what trail they are doing and there name. Overall i think the editing went well on our video and we have produced a next to professional level video.

The techniques we used when filming where continuity editing, this is when you shot you filmed before flows with the next shot. This suggests that the trail has a start and an end. We added a black and white section while editing to make the shot more noticeable. We also added a smaller POV (point of view) shot in the bottom left corner of the frame to show the viewer what the rider is seeing and to give the video a sense of speed, and to show what terrain he is riding on. We also took screenshots of the video, put them into photoshop and cut our the rider and then edited them back into the video. They then came out the of the screen in a freeze frame along the the rider name, e.g. Ollie or Ken or the name of the trail. In the print stage i made a title for our video in Photoshop and then Ken placed it into the video.

We used copyright of some logos and the equipment like the bikes we were riding and the clothes we were wearing. We asked a local counselor for permission to use the hill in our video and we also filled out a risk assessment. The video was completely was ours. This didn’t really effect the video but, If were to shoot the video again we would have take these things into consideration.

Unit 3 Evaluation - Ken

Unit 3 Evaluation

James, Ollie and myself have created video of ourselves mountain biking at our local trails.
Working as a team was useful as we could look at each others work and see what we could improve, as well as spot mistakes.  On the downside, we sometimes felt that three people was too many, and we only really needed one person for most of the editing, although we needed everyone during filming as there was often. We only had a very rough plan, so we kept an open mind when filming and editing, and tried a variety of shots and editing techniques to see what worked and what didn’t. We all had slightly different ideas of what the finished product should look like so we had some minor disagreements that probably could have been avoided if we had created a more detailed plan before going out shooting, but I do not think that this affected the outcome of the video

Our Finished product was a video promoting the mountain biking trails on Grinshill.
We used a combination of POV and stationary camera shots with video effects, such as freeze frames and text over the video, as well as having two videos playing at the same time, with the background music synced to the video. Research for the video as relatively simple, looking at different videos similar to what we planned to do, taking note of camera angles and video effects used and seeing if we could use them in our video. As I stated earlier, we didn’t  really have a set plan for the video; we planned to go up to our locations(Grinshill) after school and at weekends and film us riding down some of the trails. We originally planned to do all of the filming before the summer holidays, but I managed to crash on our first day of filming and couldn’t ride for the weeks up to the summer holidays, over which we did not have access to a camera for filming. After the holidays, we continued with filming, which took around 4 weeks, which went relatively smoothly, despite some interruptions from a friend getting stuck in a pine tree.
Editing took longer than it should due to disagreements, again due to a lack of a plan, and again easily resolved. After we had finished editing the video, we were told it needed more interesting video effects, as the video was very ‘clean’. because we had finished editing pretty much on the deadline, I feel we rushed this  and we had a chance to this again, I feel we could have done something better.

The establishing shot of the video is a panning shot of the view from the top of Grinshill to ollie and I, with text introducing us, and a logo that james designed for the group. Later on in the video, the action freezes, and tells the viewer the name of the trail that Ollie is riding. This gives the viewer basic information about the trails, as this video is supposed to promote the trails at grinshill. We left the diegetic sound of the bikes in the video, as we felt it added a sense of speed, as well as putting a song in to make the video more interesting, and again, add a sense of speed to the video.

From a legal and ethical point of view, our video had a few issues that didn’t really affect our filming. We are actually unsure if we are allowed to mountain bike on grinshill, however after riding there for 5 years, and having received no complaints (apart from narrowly avoided dog walkers), we’ve assumed that no one really minds. We also see a lot of other mountain bikers around the hill who say they have been riding here for years, also without any complaints. The typeface and logo we used were not made by us, so we would have to get permission in order to get to use them.
